RE: Grounding Generators

The graphic represents the importance of proper grounding to clear case grounding faults. GfCIs are great but proper grounding provides an additional layer of protection, the theory being that if you can't isolate ground you better deal with it. In this scenario any hot to ground short will trip a circuit breaker. Again, I'm a big supporter of GFIs but they are not a fail safe devise. I don't think there are any clear cut answers when it comes to grounding or bonding small portable 120 volt generators or inverters(obviously). However it amazes me that these are not required to have a GFI, this should have been done years ago. Sam

RE: New inverter-question about charging scheme

The second inverter can only recharge the batteries that it is connected to That kinda messes that idea up! Sam

RE: Grounding Generators

GFCI protection won't work unless neutral is bonded to chassis.A GFCI could care less if the neutral is bonded to the chassis, it is looking at a balance of current on the two current carring wires, when that balance is out of spec(5ma or so) the GFI trips. It does not care or know where that power is going, it just knows it's not getting the same power on both leads, therefore power is returning on a different path which could be a human body. Sam

RE: Closing of threads

I think Les answered the question and the mods decided that was a good stopping point. I can understand it as these 50 amp 240 volt threads seem to repeat every two days. Go to Les's web site and read it, all the correct info is there. Well... hopefully! I didn't just get this one closed.:R Sam

RE: MP3 Conversion

If your friend rips the CDs to Apple Lossless it is no problem to use the Lossless format to produce (lower-quality) MP3 or AAC copies anytime you want them. Hard drive space currently costs about one cent per 100 meg so storing them as Lossless is a no-brainer for any future format. Just derive compressed MP3s or AACs if you wish to fill a weeny player without much drive space. I have to disagree here. Apple lossless has a 50% compression, gees... you might as well leave them as wav files. I like my music to at least fit on a 50 gig drive and that's about what my 400+ CD collection takes in MP3 at a decent bit-rate conversion. It is also very nice just to drag your music files to your mp3 player or anywhere else you want it...no conversion necessary. Sam

RE: MP3 Conversion

Thanks for the responses I will give Itunes a try. I really would like to stay with MP3, I know there are some better formats out there but MP3 will play on anything and other formats just won't. Sam

MP3 Conversion

I used free rip to convert my CDs to MP3 format but I have a friend that has a MAC that needs to converter her collection. I assume Itunes might be the the way to go but I want her to convert to MP3 not ACC or whatever it is apple uses. Can Itunes do this or should I have her use something else. She probably won't be using an Ipod and that is the reason for sticking with MP3, however I'm open for suggestions. Sam

RE: GFI Trips In Garage

I had the exact same problem. Here is what I did to solve it: I opened the breaker panel up and removed the neutral wire to each breaker one at a time and tried to run the vacuum. Since I suspected that my hot water heater element was burned out (it did not work on electric), that is the first breaker that I removed the neutral from. Lo-and-behold, the vacuum worked. I then removed the water heater element and sure enough it was fried. It was causing a ground fault, but it didn't trip my garage GFI until I placed a load on it. I replaced the element and all is well now. Ken This is your answer. There is a high resistance neutral to ground connection. The most likely causes are WH element, reefer element and water in the outside receptacle. Sam

You guys need to read the thread, it is not his panel, it is the campgrounds panel. Sam

RE: Onan fuel useage amounts

A guesstimate would be 1/2 gal, for one A/C perhaps 1/4 to 1/3 with NO A/C's onI think you're right on the money. The inverter diesels do really well with no load but the gassers still consume a fair amount of fuel even with no load. Sam

RE: Manufacturers: who has staying power

I believe Thor might be one of the few left standing. They have a bunch of cash and no debt. Fleetwood is gone, it is just a matter of time...probably by the 1st of the year. I don't believe fuel costs are an issue at this point, if it were RV sales would be sky rocketing and we all know that ain't happening. Bigfoot just closed its doors, shutdown by their bank. Sam

RE: Used Brake Buddy Ok?

As soon as you plug a new one in, it is used. Mine is 4 years old and never had a problem except the cig plug end screwed off, fortunately I found it and put it back together so check your cig plug and make sure it is tight. Sam

RE: IOTA Engineering Co.great to deal with!

does any1 know if all Jaycos with the IOTA 55 amp converters allow the use of this Iota Iq4 controller? Some Jayco's use a spiecial Iota OEM converter that can't use an IQ. Post the model number. Sam

RE: Installing Inverter

As others (and I) have noted, make sure A/C, Fridge, water heater and such are either on propane or OFF And also, the converter AC must be disconnected. Sam

RE: fluorescent light - Odd issue with all of them

House batteries are fine, 4 6 volts and each of them show 7.9 volts i believe it was. House panel shows 13.4 volts on float charge.Somethings not right. 2 X 7.9 volts would be 15.8 volts which would explain why you are loosing light fixtures. Sam
